Munich Massacre 1.) This image caught my eye because it was just really creepy and sinister. 2.) The 1972 Olympics were held in Munich Germany, and to create an atmosphere of peace and welcoming, security was lax. Unfortunately, the Palestinian terrorist group Black September killed two team members and took nine hostages, demanding for the release of their group members in jail. This photo was taken as one of the terrorists came out on a balcony, shortly after, all hostages were killed as German snipers attempted to take out the group members. 3.) The 2016 olympics was the first olympics that honored the 11 victims of the massacre. 4.) 5.) Kurt Strumph Germany

Magazine Part 2

There are four types of magazine covers, and the mot widely used and recognizable is the image based cover. This usually includes a person or a group of people, but ranges from food to animals to plants. This depends on the brand of every particular magazine ad what content they provide. The second type of magazine cover is the Illustration Based cover which uses an illustration to convey what the contents of the magazine are and what their brand includes. In the 20's and 30's this was the only way to create a cover, so it was the only thing used. Illustration is less widely used now however. Type based covers are more rare, but they're just words or a short excerpt that hints to at what stories the magazines contain. Words and hoe they're presented can have a certain power, and sometimes can execute the concept better than a photo could. Concept based covers can be any mix of all the types above and is used to present a strong or funny message. The concepts must

W, The Art Issue W, December/January, The Art Issue "For W’s December/January Art Issue, the magazine collaborated with artist Yayoi Kusama to create this iconic cover image depicting George Clooney. The visually arresting image is the highlight of the cover story, for which five leading female artists were invited to create interpretive portraits of the actor. Clooney wears a suit painted by Kusama with her signature polka dots and stands against a polka-dotted backdrop. Planned to coincide with the opening of an exhibition of new work by Kusama at David Zwirner Gallery, the cover makes a powerful reference to the artist’s iconic self-portraits." Critique: The color scheme is what really pulled me in for this picture. The white and black contrasts very nicely with his skin and the pinks and oranges of the font really just creates an attention grabbing picture. The font following the dot pattern by changing colors with the black and the white is very creative and thi

Moonlight; The Pond 1.) I picked this image because it had a haunted feel to it, that the mirror image would maybe reveal something more sinister. 2.) This photographer strongly believed that altering photos was no different than changing the angle from where and when you hit the shutter. He wanted his picture to be seen as both a painting and a photograph, and he would often handprint blue tones into his pictures. 3.) He was both a painter and a photographer, but later renounced painting in the 1920's 4.) 5.) Edward Steichen 1879-1973 Luxembourg American Fine Art Company of Milwaukee - apprenticeship

Blind 1.) I chose this picture because it was very different then other photos in that it literally put a label on someone in the realest sense. 2.) The photographer used a special camera that made it seem like he was shooting in one direction but the picture was taken in another. This resulted in very candid and real perspective of the world at the time. 3.) Strand was devoted to the idea that art could have a positive influence on awareness and social thinking. 4.) 5.) Surfing Hippos 1.) This caught my eye because normally hippos are seen in a flat environment, where the water as little waves, but these waves are much bigger and prominent. 2.) Michael Nichols documented the 2,000 mile trip of Michael Fay across the continent of Africa from the Congo to the African west coast. There they found a rare sight, hippopotamuses swimming in the atlantic ocean. 3.) The natural habitat for these wild animals is being chipped away at by humans, and this picture inspired Gabon President Omar Bongo to create a chain of reserves for these animals. 4.) 5.) Michael Nichols 1952-Present Day Alabama University of North Alabama

Mushroom Cloud Over Nagasaki 1.) I choose this picture because I've only really seen a mushroom cloud from the ground view in pictures, never from an aerial view, so it caught my eye. 2.) In 1945 the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb named 'Fat Man' on Nagasaki, Japan just three days after they had bombed Hiroshima. 16 photos were shot of the 45,000 foot mushroom cloud caused by the debris, but only one was released to the public that showed the full scale of the loud from the air. 3.) I learned that Nagasaki was a secondary target, and the main target was the city of Kokura 4.) Charles Levy was a lieutenant in the army, not a photographer, so this is his only widely known photo. 5.)  Charles Levy 1918-1997 Wendover, Utah college/school not found

Intro to Portraits

Two Tips:  Experiment with Lighting Another element of randomness that you can introduce to your portraits is the way that you light them. There are almost unlimited possibilities when it comes to using light in portraits. Side-lighting can create mood, backlighting and silhouetting your subject to hide their features can be powerful. Candids With Consent Unobtrusive candids seek to be fly-on-the-wall images that catch people going about their business seemingly unaware of the camera and the photographer. This yields images that are more toward the objective end of the objective/subjective continuum, though there is not, of course, any photograph made by a human that is completely objective. Candids with consent, made when the photographer is actively engaged with the subject and the subject is conscious of this involvement, are very different. Photographs are records of the photographer's relationship with his or her subject. In consensual candids, the relationshi

American Soldier

a.) I think the most powerful picture is "Beginning to Feel Like a Soldier", because it shows that despite him being put in this adult situation, he's still a kid. b.) The images work together to tell a story in a way that makes the mental and physical changes in Ian visible as his story progresses and it really helps the viewer understand just how much the army can change a person. c.) The captions enhance the photograph by giving them reason and meaning, helping the viewer understand what the picture is supposed to be of. d.) Ian Fisher was a curious boy who wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and join the army. when he joined though, he realized that it wasn't what he thought, and was injured and had thoughts of quitting multiple times. He was deployed to a base by his home and struggled being split between the two worlds of army and home. He took a break but then eventually returned and he was deployed in Iraq where he did't find the action that
